Kernow’s 5th birthday bash

On September 22 Kernow Model Rail Centre in Camborne, Cornwall is celebrating its fifth anniversary. In conjunction with Bachmann Europe, KMRC will be hosting a demonstration of the new Bachmann Dynamis Digital system. Customers are encouraged to come and visit the shop on this date and see the Dynamis system in use. Bachmann will bring its demonstration layout so that modellers can try Dynamis before buying.
Tony Lowe from Bachmann will be present and able to discuss and demonstrate: -

  • Using Dynamis
  • How to convert your layout
  • Bachmann Sound Fitted Locomotives
  • Programming decoders
KMRC plans to have special offers on the day and will also be launching a new loyalty scheme, which awards a point for every pound spent. These points are then converted to an account credit which can be spent on any item in store or on-line. Full details of the Dynamis event and our loyalty scheme are available at www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com
When KMRC opened five years ago it had just seven Hornby locomotives in stock and owner Chris Trerise still had some hair! Since then it has increased stock levels and now has over 300 different locomotives and a full supporting range of rolling stock and accessories available. More than 60,000 customers have been dealt with, either face to face or by mail order. The event will take place at; Kernow Model Rail Centre, 98A Trelowarren Street, Camborne, Cornwall TR14 8AN, telephone: 01209 714099, web: http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com

BREAKING NEWS – Dapol to produce telescopic hood steel wagon in ‘OO’

Dapol has revealed that it is to produce a telescopic hood steel wagon for ‘OO’ gauge in 2008. An ‘N’ gauge version is already in development and should arrive later this year, with the ‘OO’ wagon due to be released at the Warley NEC exhibition in December 2008. The announcement follows Dapol’s decision to press ahead with its ‘OO’ intermodal spine wagon despite a disappointing response from retailers and customers (see separate news story).

BREAKING NEWS! Possible New Dapol ‘OO’ Spine Wagon latest

Seventy days ago Dapol announced that it was considering the production of a ‘00’ gauge FEA ‘Spine Wagon’ based on exactly the same specification as our ‘N’ gauge model. This statement was issued today and is published in full.
“Dapol contacted every model rail magazine with the press release and posted the release on its website. It was also distributed to and featured on other web-based media and we understand that it did generate great discussion. We even attended at regional exhibitions, again fully explaining the model and replying to many e-mails sent directly to us. We were therefore content that our ‘message’ did reach the potential buyers.
As this was a new business step for Dapol and we obviously had to be certain that there was indeed a market need, the press release asked modellers to go to their local stockist to tell them of their interest should such a model be produced.
In round terms, we needed to see a minimum commitment level from stockists of 2,000 units for us to consider the model. In truth, 2,000 models is slightly short of a break-even position, but at least it would have given us some enthusiasm that the model was actually needed within the ‘modern’ market.
Our view was that, as these wagons prototypically run in long rakes (10+), it only equated to 200 modellers buying a rake of ten and as such we were quietly confident that the 2,000 level would be easily reached. Indeed, if there were committed modellers out there who would run two rakes on the same layout, then only 100 buyers were needed within the UK.
All of our 237 stockist were contacted by letter. Several were also visited by our sales representative and all subsequently received a telephone call asking for feedback and outline commitment.
In rough figures:-
57% of stockists advised that they had received zero interest and as such, they were not prepared to consider stocking the model.
23% of stockists said they would support us and would commit to between 1 and 5 models in total.
9% of stockists said they would support us and would commit to between 6 and 10 models in total.
6% of stockists said they would support us and would commit to 20 models in total minimum.
4% of stockists said they would support us and would commit to at least 100 models.

…..and one stockist wanted the full 2000 units as an exclusive but no other stockist could be supplied!

Excluding the last statement (which was clearly unworkable and unfair to our other stockists) the total level of ‘commitment’ from all of our stockists was ………… 1,589 units!
Clearly somewhat of a surprise!
Now, under normal circumstances, this model would have rejected; BUT, there is something about it which transcends logic. Call it ‘Gut-Feeling’ – we think that the model IS needed and therefore we WILL produce it.
The model will be sold as a ‘twin pack’ at an estimated cost of under £20.00. The first livery will be ‘Freightliner’ and will be released as four different running numbers. The initial release will be at the Festival of British Railway Modelling at Alexandra Palace in March 2008. There will then be another release in September 2008 of the GBRf livery, again with four different running numbers. As with our ‘N’ model criteria, we will limit production to 250 units per running number.
If and when the market dictates, there will be subsequent releases in Freightliner and GBRf with changes in running numbers on an ongoing basis. There is also a strong possibility that the ‘Jarvis Fastline’ livery could be produced in the near future.
The tooling for the model was commenced earlier today and regular updates with Cad/Cam images will be posted on the Dapol website. We have also commenced work on 40ft and 20ft containers to compliment our model.
To all modern-image modellers we would ask “please support us”. If we find that there is support for the Spine Wagon and Telescopic Steel Hood (see separate news story) then we will commit to a range of modern wagons into the future.

BREAKING NEWS – Bachmann cancels ‘Royal Scot’

Bachmann Europe PLC today announced that it has withdrawn the planned ‘OO’ rebuilt ‘Royal Scot’ 4-6-0 from its range.
Managing Director, Graham Hubbard, said “we have a great affinity to the rebuilt ‘Scots’, our parent company Kader Industrial has been producing them since 1977, initially for Mainline and since 1997 for Bachmann. We are naturally disappointed, but the market cannot support two brand new models of the same prototype and we will concentrate our efforts on the other LMS 4-6-0 locomotives already announced. The new ‘Jubilee’ is now very advanced (see September issue of Model Rail) and we are sure our customers and dealers will understand why we have withdrawn this model from our range, allowing Hornby to continue with its project. We have not taken this decision lightly but we have to be realistic and allow our heads, rather than our hearts, to reach the right decision for our company and the hobby in general.”

JULY 31: Kernow confirms green Heljan ‘33s’

Heljan is to produce two early BR green BRCW Type 3s (Class 33s) for Kernow Model Rail Centre. The Danish company has so far declined to release its ‘OO’ Class 33 in original condition as the body tooling includes modifications made the roof in later years. However, in response to customer feedback suggesting that the majority of modellers are willing to overlook this small detail, KMRC has commissioned two locomotives – D6581 and D6583. The models are limited to just 300 pieces each and will cost £84.99 each (post free in UK) or £165.00 for the pair. Delivery is expected in October.
Also in the pipeline for Kernow is a Bachmann ‘OO’ model of GB Railfreight 66705 Golden Jubilee (expected January 2008), and two InterCity Mainline livery Class 37/4s from ViTrains Models – 37417 Highland Region and 37420 The Scottish Hosteller. Bachmann is to replace its ageing BR 4MT 4-6-0 with an all-new model. The plan was announced at the company’s annual open day on July 23, alongside several other new developments in ‘N’ and ‘OO’.
On show for the first time were pre-production models of the forthcoming ‘OO’ LMS ‘Jubilee’ 4-6-0s, with three alternative tenders (riveted and welded Stanier 4,000gal and Fowler 3,500gal) and both long and short firebox variants. A fourth tender is planned for the ‘Jubilee’ and several other features are now confirmed. The models will have an opening smokebox door, very fine motion and wheels, sliding cab roof vent and a tender designed to accommodate a speaker for DCC sound.
Also on show were prototypes of the Bachmann ‘low emission’ Class 66 variant (pictured), Irish 141/181 Class diesel, new 12 ton ventilated and insulated vans and more.

Tooling work is now complete for the 4-car ‘Voyager’ and the first models are expected to be available in time for Christmas.

BREAKING NEWS - Graham Farish Class 04 arrives

Bachmann has delivered the first samples of its new Graham Farish ‘N’ gauge Class 04 diesel shunter for review. The models will be released shortly in both British Railways green livery as D2246 (catalogue number 371-050) and in the later corporate blue as D2258 (371-051 ). Retailing at £45.50 the model has a slow running chassis, is the first British ‘N’ gauge model with see through spoked wheels, NEM ‘N’ gauge couplings, super-detailed body with separate handrails and vacuum pipes and a protoypical rotating crank with coupling rods coupled to a six wheel chassis. As well as ‘N’ gauge use, this chassis should also appeal to 009 narrow gauge modellers. A full review of this model will appear in August issue of Model Rail magazine, on sale July 19.
A total of 140 locomotives to a Drewry design were built by the Vulcan Foundry and Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn between 1952 and 1962. Widespread closure of lines and the move away from wagonload working to block trains for freight resulted in much of the work being lost. The first locomotive was withdrawn in 1968, the last in 1972. Many went on to be sold to industrial users at home and in Italy. Eighteen examples have been preserved for use on heritage railways.
