JUNE 20: Moor Street wins DEMU layout prize

Diesel & Electric Modellers United (DEMU) has announced the results of the recent DEMU Layout Challenge held at its annual Showcase exhibition. The remit for this year’s layout challenge was a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Cyril Freezer’s enduring ‘Minories’ track plan. In keeping with the original plan, the competition rules detailed that the scenic section had to be no greater than 7ft by 1ft in 4mm (scaled up or down proportionally for other scales), had to have three distinct platform faces and a double track entry/exit to ‘offstage’. The only other condition was for entries to be representative of the D&E era in keeping with the society aims.
Five entries were constructed:

  • Birmingham Moor Street by Scalefour Society West Midlands Area Group
  • Ripper Street by the DEMU Thames Valley Area Group,
  • Kilstewarton by the DEMU Scottish Lowlands Area Group,
  • Westonmouth Central by Adrian Full
  • Minories (GN) by The Model Railway Club
The overall winner, as judged by Nick Freezer (Cyril Freezer’s Son), was Birmingham Moor Street which is also entered in an expanded size into Scalefour / DEMU D&E layout challenge in 2008.
The photographs show the presentation to the winner showing (left to right) Simon Stevens, representing S4 WMAG, Mark Baker (DEMU Chairman) and Nick Freezer.
